DANCE and theatre
Jonny Hibbs is an emerging choreographer from Dartmoor in the UK. The work he makes explores new perspectives of dance and can be found in theatres, concert halls, music festivals, outdoors and in unexpected places. Using a mix of improvisation and intricately set choreography, Jonny’s work is often made from responses to what it means to dance in this time.
Training, Early Career and more info:
Jonny received a contemporary dance training (with scholarship) from London Studio Centre. Before that, he was training as a violinist at the classical music vocational school, Chetham’s School of Music. Since graduating from his undergraduate training in dance, Jonny joined Rambert School as one of four dance researchers to explore, question and play around with methods of choreography, finding out different approaches towards dance. (Check back here soon for his published research).
To make money during his studies, Jonny was a cleaner at The Royal Ballet School. It wasn’t long before Jonny came back to the school as a guest academic lecturer helping the upper school students with their practice-based dissertations. Jonny now teaches for London Studio Centre as a lecturer in Choreography and also in Physical Voice, which is a module he developed with Sue Booker and Edd Mitton in response to the need to further the versatility of contemporary dancers and their understanding of text and music.
Jonny hops from project to project and can be contacted on jonnyhibbschoreographer@gmail.com
When not working in dance, Jonny is busy in a London pottery studio, assisting new potters young and old. Jonny has written audio plays for the BBC, poetry and has performed as an actor in theatre, on screen and in audiobooks.
